Specifically, Mandelstam is trying to grasp the aspect of the world-time that Heidegger so well expresses in his famous book as &#8220;clearing,&#8221; the idea that nothing can come to be and manifest itself to the world unless there is a void, space, or clearing to do so. It is an ancient idea that we can find, among other places, in Kabbalah with god withdrawing itself to make space for the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandelstam builds the poem in, so, reading it backwards from its culmination, I get:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/em>: something that is about to be, but not here yet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u0434\u043e\u0433\u0430\u0434\u043a\u0430<\/em>: anticipation of that &#8220;something&#8221; which is about to be<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>o\u0434\u0443\u0448\u0435\u0432\u043b\u044f\u044e\u0449\u0435\u0433\u043e \u043d\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/em>: the absence of something, the void, the clearing that makes that &#8220;something&#8221; possible. Without that clearing everything is &#8220;filled up&#8221; and cannot move or change, therefore is unanimated, &#8220;\u043d\u0435\u043e\u0434\u0443\u0448\u0435\u0432\u043b\u0451\u043d\u043d\u043e&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u0415\u0435 \u0432\u043b\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0442 \u0441\u0442\u0435\u0441\u043d\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/em>: the force that makes something to fill in the void, like the force that makes water under pressure to fill in a cavity, or the force that makes gas to expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u043e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0436\u0430\u044f, \u0431\u044b\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0443\u044e, \u043f\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0434\u043a\u0430<\/em>: the movement created by that force and its velocity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u043d\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0435\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0439<\/em>: the rhythmic character of that movement, the rhythmic cycle of filling in the clearings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u043d\u0435\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0430\u044f<\/em>: stepping into the voids, filling them in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u041a \u043f\u0443\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0439 \u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b\u0435<\/em>: the voids<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image of a driven and uneven gait of a group of people is a breathtaking expression of this kind aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n        <\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not sure I know exactly what I mean, but I see Mandelstam standing, like Moses, on top of the Mount Nebo, on the brink of modernity, filled with premonition, but not allowed to enter. He says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olgasedakova.com\/poetica\/1584\">this poem is the best he have written, that this is his will which has to be preserved for future generations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is trying to break away from the &#8220;horizontal&#8221; sense of time into the &#8220;vertical&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;\u042f \u0432\u0438\u0434\u0435\u043b \u043e\u0437\u0435\u0440\u043e, \u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f\u0449\u0435\u0435 \u043e\u0442\u0432\u0435\u0441\u043d\u043e.&#8221;<br>-O.
